Web Site ImplementationI don't make any claims to being an artistic designer for Web Sites, but I do have experience of setting up a number of web sites, some simple, so not so. While it is easy to create a bunch of pages, the maintainability of the site and the easy inclusion of new and changing information need to be included when the site is designed. Getting a consistent look and feel across the site helps build a corporate identity.
CGI Scripts and SQLI have generated many CGI scripts for presenting information and interfacing to the back end systems. In addition to the sailing results software I have created a set of Perl CGI scripts to allow users to examine the Purchase Order database via a company's Intranet. This allowed them to track the progress of purchases, through approval, delivery, and payment. The CGI scripts used SQL statements to extract the data from a Microsoft Access database. All the software the users needed was their favourite Web Browser (no additional licensing issues).
Web Site TestingLike any software system, creating a Web Site is not just a case of editing a set of pages and making them available on your web site.
If the site uses CGI scripts or other software to create the pages on demand, then the problem becomes even more difficult. Eastmore has been involved in testing a major Web Portal and has developed scripts to check the validity of links, the conformance of HTML to W3C standards and to spell check the pages. These scripts are specifically designed to work with dynamically created pages. |
